Reading Amazon Kindle eBooks Aloud with the App

You can have your Android or iOS device read your Kindle eBooks aloud to you by utilizing your device's accessibility settings.

Utilizing Android Devices

Within the Android Accessibility Help section, Google provides information on how to turn on TalkBack.

To turn on the TalkBack feature:

  • Open your device’s Settings app.
  • Open the Accessibility category.
  • Under Services, select TalkBack.
  • Change the TalkBack setting to “On.”
  • In the confirmation dialog box, select “OK.”

Android provides a tutorial on how to utilize TalkBack with your device. If the tutorial does not automatically open upon your first time turning on TalkBack:

  • Select “TalkBack” in the Accessibility category, and select “Settings.” (The same location where you turned on the feature.)
  • Under Miscellaneous, select “TalkBack tutorial.”

Utilizing iOS Devices

To turn on the Speak Screen feature:

  • Open your device’s Settings app.
  • Open the General category, and then the Accessibility category.
  • Select “Spoken Content.”
  • Change the Speak Screen setting to “On.”

Tips for Utilizing Speak Screen

  • Swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to hear the content of the screen within your Kindle app or any item you want it to read aloud (e.g., documents, emails, etc.).
  • Change the Highlight Content setting to “On,” to highlight content as it is spoken.
  • You can adjust the speaking rate from slower to faster in this section according to your reading/listening preference.
  • Select “Voices” within the Speak Screen settings to choose your preferred voice dictation.
